Last season, fans of Broadway had a reason to rejoice as the Thrasher-Horne Center assembled its first full season of some of theatre’s biggest and best touring musicals. Audiences were treated to full-scale productions of Annie, Ragtime, Saturday Night Fever, Once, and Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. This year, we’ve filled the calendar once again with an assortment of shows that offer something for every theatre lover. In the coming months, our boards will be visited by the likes of Into The Woods, Avenue Q, Xanadu, and Mamma Mia! – and we want to offer our blog readers an exclusive sneak peak into these four incredible shows below.

With only 10 actors, one piano and boundless imagination, this witty and wildly theatrical re-invention is INTO THE WOODS like you’ve never seen it before! This stripped-down, unplugged, thrillingly clever new version includes all the dazzling classic songs like “Children Will Listen” and “Giants in the Sky.” Mind the wolf, heed the witch and honor the giant at this extraordinary musical about the power of wishes and what happens when they really do come true.

AVENUE Q is the first of two shows being brought to the Thrasher-Horne through a partnership with Slow Burn Theatre Company of South Florida, giving us a chance to highlight the best of professional theatre being produced within our home state.
A laugh out loud look at life after college with badly behaved puppets. The 2004 Tony Award-winning musical, currently playing on Broadway, is an ingenious combination of The Real World and Sesame Street. Savvy, sassy and eminently likable, this breakthrough production is an “autobiographical and biographical” coming-of-age parable that addresses and satirizes the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood.
Part flesh, part felt and packed with heart, AVENUE Q is still the funniest and freshest show in New York City! This laugh-out-loud musical tells the timeless story of a bright-eyed college grad named Princeton. When he arrives in the city with big dreams and a tiny bank account, he has to move into a shabby apartment all the way out on AVENUE Q. Still, the neighbors seem nice. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Lucy (the slut), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the pervert), superintendent Gary Coleman (yes, that Gary Coleman) and other new friends! Together, they struggle to find jobs, dates, and their ever-elusive purpose in life. Come explore your purpose with them when the show arrives in December.

XANADU follows the journey of a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest artistic creation of all time – the first ROLLER DISCO…hey, it’s 1980! But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos abounds.
This hilarious, roller skating, musical adventure about following your dreams despite the limitations others set for you rolls along to the original hit score composed by pop-rock legends Jeff Lynne and John Farrar, and includes, “Magic”, “All Over The World”, “Suddenly”, “I’m Alive”, “Evil Woman“, “Have You Never Been Mellow” and “Xanadu”, to name a few, and is based on the Universal Pictures’ cult classic movie of the same title, which starred Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly.
It’s hilarity on wheels for adults, children and anyone who has ever wanted to feel inspired, as one of Broadway’s master storytellers, Douglas Carter Beane, weaves a moving, electrifying tale of endless fun that will keep you in stitches, while the original, legendary chart-topping tunes lift you out of your seat. You’ll want to keep the music in your head, and XANADU in your heart, forever.
Both AVENUE Q and XANADU are presented by Slow Burn Theatre, a regional theatre company from South Florida that is making a name for itself with their exciting and fresh theatrical productions.
